2025’s Underseen Clown Slasher Gem Will Premiere on Its New Streaming Home Very Soon

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Clown in a Cornfield

Clown in a Cornfield was a different approach to the horror genre that was released earlier this year, but sadly, it mostly flew under the radar. That is, except for purist fans of the horror genre who saw in the slasher something that was unique. Fortunately, the film can be re-evaluated in a matter of days, as Clown in a Cornfield is set to arrive on Shudder on August 8. As of today, the evil clown movie holds a Certified Fresh label and a solid 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Not bad at all for a horror feature that’s not part of a previous franchise or known IP.

The film was inspired by the book of the same name written by Adam Cesare. It follows a teenager who has moved with her father to the small town of Kettle Springs. Quinn makes friends rather quickly and begins partying without her father’s approval. However, the celebrations are cut short when Frendo, an evil clown, begins massacring the teenagers. The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis reads as follows:

Quinn and her father have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play.

If streaming’s not your thing, the film directed by Eli Craig is also set to receive an awesome physical release. On September 16, Clown in a Cornfield will receive a dreamy 4K release that’ll have you looking up the prices of disc players. Just the packaging is worth the money, as it includes beautiful artwork and a set of magnets that’ll make other horror fans envious.

'Clown in a Cornfield' Is a Silly "Killer Clown" Movie With a Message

Naturally, the film doesn’t reveal its punch until viewers find out why Frendo has become a sadistic killer. When the mask literally comes off, you will be saying “Ahhh” and nodding (hopefully not in approval, but in recognition of the twist). During the necessary exposition dump, the reasons behind the killings are revealed, and Clown in a Cornfield turns into something else: A horror film with a subtle commentary about social decay.

But let’s not kid ourselves. While Frendo’s motive is strong and makes for a good conversation, Clown in a Cornfield is also a straightforward horror movie that’s silly enough to make everyone laugh. Everyone can have a good time with it. It’s campy enough to make you want to read Cesare’s book, and see if the original source had the same essence. We’ll spoil that for you: it does, and the books (it has become a book franchise) are as cool as the movie adaptation.
