‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Is a Hilarious Sequel That Surpasses Expectations

Adam Sandler and the cast of Happy Gilmore return to slapstick golf glory almost 30 years later in a hilarious sequel that’s much better than expected. Happy Gilmore 2 hits the fairway and nails a comedic birdie with just the right dose of heartfelt nostalgia, as Sandler and longtime writing partner Tim Herlihy capture the essence of the original in an updated narrative loaded with surprises. The addition of current golf superstars, celebrity cameos and members of Sandler’s actual family makes the large ensemble even more fun.
Happy Gilmore 2 drops a bombshell right off the tee: Happy’s (Sandler) meteoric rise to golf greatness in the ’90s did not last. He’s now a single dad with four unruly adult sons and a teenage daughter, Vienna, played by 16-year-old Sunny Sandler. Vienna excels at ballet, while Happy works in the produce department at Stop & Shop. He’s completely broke and a full-blown alcoholic who’s mired in misery because of everything he’s tragically lost. It’s a shocking start before the humor kicks into high gear.
