Idris Elba and John Cena Stumble Through the Underwhelming ‘Heads of State’

If you found yourself hating on the action-packed G20 earlier this year, chances are you’ll have more negative thoughts about Heads of State, Amazon MGM’s latest offering that also happens to center on a U.S. president with guns blazing. The timing of this action flick relative to that of the recent Viola Davis starrer — both of which are Prime Video selections — might leave some wondering if it was intentional. Or will Heads of State end up feeling like an accidental sequel or spinoff of G20, making the latter seem all the more appealing?
Heads of State is not a sequel to the Chris Rock-Bernie Mac comedy Head of State (2003) either. It finds minor successes through its stacked cast — you may already adore Idris Elba, and have similar feelings towards wrestler-turned-actor John Cena — and occasional one-liners. Other than that, add this movie, directed by Ilya Naishuller (Nobody, Hardcore Henry), to the list of iffy straight-to-Prime Video features.
