‘Together’ Review: Alison Brie & Dave Franco Are a Disgusting Delight

Rare is the film that can capture the brutal honesty of our most intimate relationships with such clarity, let alone one that successfully balances searing humor with distinct existential dread. Together achieves all of the above and then some, using body horror as a visceral metaphor to unpack our deepest insecurities in relationships, both as individuals and, well, together.

Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco) are a relatively “average” couple in their 30s. If you can’t relate to them, you definitely know a couple like them: Millie is a responsible grade-school teacher with a reasonable head on her shoulders who’s ready to move from the city into a cute old house in a small rural area to start a new teaching job.

Tim is a musician who had some mild success in the not-too-distant past, but he seems to be on the declining side of his peak, even before his father died in a particularly disturbing incident. Still struggling to recover months later, Tim has become stagnant and less certain in his relationship with Millie, hesitantly agreeing to move hours away from a life of meager possibility – one hindered by his own insecurity and fears of commitment.
